Steve was the founder and drummer for the Cleveland progressive rock band, Nautilus. In 1977, he joined Vasil Zook as a percussionist/drummer and played Mini Moog and Mellotron for the band. When Vasil Zook disbanded, he then returned to the Nautilus berth.

In 1979, he reprised his Vasil Zook role in the newly formed St. Elmo's Fire. Steve played with St. Elmo's Fire for about a year before returning to the Nautilus and sailing off to a mysterious island.
